Why is there such interest in online learning now?

Students value online learning when it surmounts hurdles of space and time:

  • space, as in distances separating students from classes, or a preference for learning in familiar spaces;
  • time, as in conflicts, including family obligations, that prevent attending scheduled classes.

Some students also like the technological component in online learning or prefer text communications to verbal interactions.

Space and time solutions also attract teachers—being able to teach from remote locations, for instance, or while traveling. Some also enjoy the creative uses of technology.

Administrators appreciate online courses that solve problems such as overbooked classes or narrow enrollment bases restricted by time and space.

I was just reading an interesting list of reasons for online learning, some of the reasons as you listed but also with a couple of things I hadn't thought of before: 1. Online learning helps teach the technology skills necessary to survive in this information age. 2. Everyone can contribute, unlike in a classroom where the more outgoing or the more controlling monopolize the classroom. 3. And, the accessibility to a broader range of materials than in a classroom.

Honestly, I miss the contact of real people in a real classroom occasionally. However, the benefits of place, time, quality of instruction, availability of materials, and so on, more than compensate for that disadvantage.
